But about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/2\/2\/e1500323\">4 billion people<\/a>, nearly two-thirds of the population of the world, face severe water scarcity and over 2 billion people live in countries experiencing high water stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water supply is not equitably distributed across the globe. In sub-Saharan Africa, about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/article\/water-inequality\/\">40%<\/a>&nbsp;of the population lacks safe drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another dimension of water inequality is gender. A\u00a0study\u00a0conducted in 25 sub-Saharan African countries by UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme in 2019 estimated that women spend not less than 16 million hours daily to collect drinking water, whereas their male counterparts spend 6 million hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These inequalities are evident in Ghana. About\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/222514952_Water_and_sanitation_in_Ghana\">38%<\/a>\u00a0of the population lack access to potable water and there are regional\u00a0disparities\u00a0and urban-rural dichotomies in water supply.
