{"id":8658,"date":"2020-03-18T08:30:10","date_gmt":"2020-03-18T05:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=8658"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:55","slug":"chad-repaying-100m-debt-to-angola-with-cattle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2020\/03\/18\/chad-repaying-100m-debt-to-angola-with-cattle\/","title":{"rendered":"Chad &#8216;Repaying $100m Debt To Angola With Cattle&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Chad is repaying Angola a debt of $100m (\u00a382m) with\ncattle, Angola&#8217;s state-run newspaper has reported.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unusual agreement is\nseen as creating a win-win situation for both nations &#8211; Chad is short of cash\nwhile Angola needs cattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1,000 cows\narrived by ship in Angola&#8217;s capital, Luanda, as the first payment, Jornal de\nAngola reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, Angola would\nreceive 75,000 cattle over 10 years, meaning it has accepted payment of $1,333\nper animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad would send a further\n3,500 head of cattle later this month, the report added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad had proposed repaying\nthe 2017 debt with cattle, and Angola had agreed because it would help the southern\nAfrican state rebuild its cattle population in drought-affected areas, the\nstate-run daily paper said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angola is often hit by\ndrought, causing animals to die of hunger and thirst and leaving many villagers\ndestitute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although oil rich, the\ncountry is still striving to recover from the legacy of a 27-year civil war\nthat ravaged the country after independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad is described by the the World Health Organisation of Animal Health (OIE) as a\u00a0<strong>&#8220;livestock farming country par excellence&#8221;<\/strong>, with about 94 million head of cattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Livestock accounts for 30%\nof Chad&#8217;s exports, and is its main source of foreign exchange after oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a report last October, the World Bank said<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/country\/chad\/overview\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><strong>Chad&#8217;s economy &#8220;remains fragile<\/strong>\u00a0and vulnerable to considerable risk, such as oil price volatility and regional insecurity&#8221; caused by militant Islamist groups operating in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-51925035\">the\noriginal story<\/a> on BBC News<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chad is repaying Angola a debt of $100m (\u00a382m) with cattle, Angola&#8217;s state-run newspaper has reported.
