This\nWorld Wildlife Day, the Wild for Life campaign is excited to partner with The\nOcean Agency, an organization that utilizes the power of creative collaboration\nto accelerate ocean conservation and climate action. To foster change, the\nOcean Agency raises awareness of the ocean\u2019s most pressing issue and inspires\noptimism by creating innovative solutions to these issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\npartnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, the Ocean Agency has\nlaunched Glowing Glowing Gone, a creative awareness campaign that draws\nattention to coral fluorescence due to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coral\nfluorescence, or \u201cglowing\u201d coral, is a last line of defense before coral dies\nand bleaches. The Ocean Agency worked with Pantone and Adobe to turn the\nwarning colours of glowing coral into three official Pantone colours, to\ninspire action that everyone can use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through\nGlowing Glowing Gone, The Ocean Agency hopes to garner public support to\ninspire policy and funding to conserve coral reefs and save an ecosystem on\nwhich our entire planet depends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why are coral reefs important for\nmarine life and the environment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coral\nreefs support a quarter of all marine life\u2014an estimated 1 to 9 million species.\nThey are like \u2018underwater cities\u2019. These cities dwarf those built by humans and\nare critically important in the life cycle of so many species\u2014from the smallest\nto the largest\u2014acting as nurseries, sources of food, cleaning stations and\nbreeding grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What benefits do coral reefs provide\nfor humans?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coral\nreefs provide half a billion people with food security and livelihoods. They\nare essential to sustaining healthy fisheries, which is the number one protein\nsource for 3 billion people worldwide. Additionally, thanks to coral reefs,\nfisheries and tourism generate hundreds of billions of dollars per year for the\nglobal economy. They also protect coastlines from increasing damage by\nbuffering shorelines against waves, storms and floods, which helps to prevent\nloss of life, property damage and erosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the biggest misconception\nabout coral reefs?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

People\noften think of coral reefs as just pretty places to admire whilst on holiday,\nrather than critically important ecosystems. In fact, coral reefs support more\nlife per hectare than virtually anywhere on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the biggest threats to coral\nreefs today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overfishing,\ncoastal development and pollution are all major threats to coral reefs.\nHowever, the largest threat to reefs is now climate change. The ocean has\nabsorbed over 93 per cent of the heat generated by climate change. This puts\ncoral reefs directly in danger, as they are the ecosystems most vulnerable to\nclimate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the consequences of a world\nwithout coral reefs?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nreefs disappeared, thousands of the world\u2019s fish species would be left without\nnurseries, breeding grounds, food sources, protection from predators and more.\nIn turn, coastal communities would be left without the main food and income\nsource they need to survive. In addition, tourism\u2014the major source of income\nfor these communities\u2014would plummet. We simply cannot afford to lose coral\nreefs. Aside from impacting billions of people who depend on them, the loss of\ncoral reefs would mark a dangerous moment in our history: the moment we start\nlosing not just single species, but entire global ecosystems on which we all\ndepend.
