Rwanda\nis one of the ten countries that are competing for an award of $1 million under\nthe \u2018Million Cool Roofs Challenge\u2019-a global competition to accelerate access to\naffordable, sustainable cooling through rapid deployment of cool roof materials\nfor residential, municipal, and commercial buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ncompetition is an initiative of the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Programme and\nother programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kigali\nCooling Efficiency Programme was set up after Kigali Amendment of the Montreal\nProtocol was ratified in 2016 in order to help developing countries transition\nto energy-efficient, climate-friendly, and affordable cooling solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\nentered into force on 1st January 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under\nthe Kigali Amendment, countries committed to cut the production and consumption\nof hydro-fluorocarbons (HFCs) \u2014 potent greenhouse gases used in refrigeration\nand air conditioning \u2014 by more than 80 percent over the next 30 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This\neffort has the potential to avoid up to 0.4\u00b0 C of global warming by the end of\nthe century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ncontesting countries for $1 million award include Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa,\nNiger, Senegal, and Cote d\u2019Ivoire, Mexico, Bangladesh, Indonesia and\nPhilippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Haruna Nshimiyimana, the Division Manager of Housing Regulations and Standards at Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA),\u00a0if Rwanda gets the award in the beginning of 2021, the part of this sum will be used to support the \u201cNational Green Urbanization Centre of Excellence\u201d\u00a0 that will be established soon to promote green building technologies.
