{"id":8188,"date":"2020-02-19T17:00:23","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T14:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=8188"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:52","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:52","slug":"kenya-moves-to-join-international-solar-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2020\/02\/19\/kenya-moves-to-join-international-solar-alliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya Moves To Join International Solar Alliance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kenya is moving to join the <a href=\"http:\/\/isolaralliance.org\/\">International Solar Alliance (ISA)<\/a>, a grouping of sunshine countries expected to play an equivalent role of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) with the shift in focus from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenya was the only remaining country in East Africa to join the association, despite being the second largest standalone solar market in the world, behind India. The main goal of the solar grouping is to ignite increased use of solar energy and cut reliance on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve\nset in motion the process of joining and the AG\u2019s (Attorney General) office is\ndoing due diligence that will guide our next step,\u201d Energy principal secretary\nJoseph Njoroge said in interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 6.2 million solar kits have been sold in Kenya over the\npast 10 years. The country is currently hosting the sixth Global Off-Grid Solar\nForum 2020 in Nairobi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nsolar alliance, ISA, is a grouping of over 120 nations with more others\nexpected to join. It\u2019s headquartered in India and was birthed during the Paris\n2015 climate conference in France. They are considered sunshine countries \u2013\nsitting between the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tropic_of_Cancer\">Tropic\nof Cancer<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tropic_of_Capricorn\">Tropic of Capricorn<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except\nKenya, all the other countries in east Africa are members of the solar\nalliance.
