{"id":7770,"date":"2020-01-27T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=7770"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:49","slug":"kengen-to-launch-bottled-water-in-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2020\/01\/27\/kengen-to-launch-bottled-water-in-may\/","title":{"rendered":"KenGen To Launch Bottled Water In May"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kenya\u2019s\nlargest power producer KenGen will enter the bottled water market in May with\nlaunch of its drinking water brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ncompany, which is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), has set up a\nbottling plant at its Gitaru power station \u2013 Kenya\u2019s largest hydroelectric\nstation with a capacity of 225 megawatts (MW). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTarget\ndate to launch formally Gitaru water is May 1, 2020. But as we speak, it\u2019s up\nand running with all the drinking water used by us (KenGen offices) coming from\nthere,\u201d the company updated us on the progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked\non the brand name, the firm said: \u201cOn the trademark, there\u2019s a proposed name\nbut registration process is still underway. We\u2019ll only share once the process\nis complete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nwater business is part of the power producer\u2019s revenue diversification\nstrategy, including consultancy and geothermal steam sales. The entry raises\nthe stakes in the local drinking water market already teeming with dozens of\nbottled water brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KenGen\u2019s\nwater plant was first announced two years ago, having cost about Sh37.8 million\nto construct, according to earlier estimates. Construction was by Aquachem\nTechnologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nfacility purifies water through reverse osmosis and has a capacity to process\n3,000 litres per hour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides\nopening a new revenue stream, KenGen looks to save up to Sh32 million per year\nin drinking water costs for it\u2019s over 2,400 employees. Bottling will include\nlarge 18.9 litres containers for water dispensers, currently used in its\noffices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUse\nof seepage water was taken as the best solution because; water is pre-filtered\n(no pre-treatment chemicals to remove suspended particles i.e. aluminum\nsulphate and sodium bicarbonate are not used),\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KenGen,\nwhich is 70 percent owned by the government has been keen to shore up its\nrevenues through alternative cash streams, a quest that saw it create KenGen\nEnergy Services, a subsidiary to handle non-generation businesses, including\ngeothermal development consultancy. The power producer controls about 60\npercent of Kenya\u2019s generation market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gitaru\npower station, where the water plant is located, is one of the Seven Forks\nhydrostations belonging to KenGen on Tana River.
