Nairobi shopping malls have turned to rooftop solar-powered\nstations for own use like lighting, powering escalators and lifts in efforts to\ncut their hefty energy costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Galleria Mall, on the city outskirts along Langata Road,\nis going to be the latest shopping complex to tap solar for its daytime energy\nneeds. It\u2019s set to join Garden City Mall on Thika Road and Two Rivers as the other\nmalls that have constructed captive solar projects for own use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 0.56MW Galleria rooftop solar plant was to be\ncompleted last quarter of last year, but suffered delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The completion date has now been moved to the second\nquarter of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We had some logistical issues\nshipping in the equipment. From manufacturing, to shipping in and clearing\nat the Mombasa port. Now that it has arrived in the country, we\nexpect to complete it anywhere between the first quarter and May,\u201d said Solarcentury East Africa director\nRoberto Martin \u2013 the contractor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cInvestment\nin solar by businesses is good economics. With solar, large consumers tend to\nhave some control over their long-term power costs besides fostering\necofriendly workplace practices,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aside from slashing costs, the private solar projects are\ncollectively helping reduce the country\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The World Bank last year lauded Kenya as \u201cthe birthplace\nof a flourishing private solar industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This comes as more large power consumers including\nmanufacturers and shopping malls cut reliance on power from the national grid,\nwith their daytime operations being powered by solar plants perched on rooftops\nof their buildings and carports. Kenya Power\u2019s supply has been limited to\nmostly nighttime operations and during brief periods when sunlight drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
