Marsabit\nwind speeds average 11.4m\/s.&nbsp; Other best\nlocations for wind parks, based on wind speeds and topography are Samburu,\nLaikipia, Meru, Nyeri, Nyandarua and Kajiado, according to Energy ministry\nrecords. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Onshore wind turbines work well on raised grounds\nreceiving steady, high wind speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn average the country has an area of close to 90,000\nsquare kilometres with very excellent wind speeds of 6m\/s (metres per second)\nand above,\u201d the ministry says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, satellite data indicates that Nakuru is\nthe best location in Kenya to set up a solar power station. Nairobi, Kisumu and\nMombasa are the next best locations to harvest solar in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNakuru is the best location to construct a solar power plant because the area receives high sun radiation levels while the land is elevated and the temperature is cool,\u201d said French firm Urbasolar which gathered the satellite data. A month later the country again commissioned 55MW Garissa solar park \u2013 the largest in East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wind currently accounts for 13 percent of Kenya\u2019s total\ninstalled capacity of about 2,700MW, while solar accounts for two percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;A wind energy data\nanalysis conducted by WinDForce Management Services Ltd indicated that Kenya\nhas a potential to generate a total of 4,600 MW from wind energy, or nearly double\nthe country\u2019s current total installed capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other potential sites with high wind power yields include\nLamu, off shore Malindi, Loitokitok at the foot of Kilimanjaro and Narok\nplateau.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marsabit is the best location in Kenya to set up a wind power plant while Nakuru is tops in solar.
