{"id":7545,"date":"2020-01-17T08:40:33","date_gmt":"2020-01-17T05:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=7545"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:48","slug":"2019-was-the-oceans-hottest-year-on-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2020\/01\/17\/2019-was-the-oceans-hottest-year-on-record\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 Was The Oceans&#8217; Hottest Year On Record"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Olivia Rosane <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/oceans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oceans<\/a>&nbsp;just had their warmest year on record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study published in\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/content\/pdf\/10.1007\/s00376-020-9283-7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Advances in Atmospheric Sciences Monday<\/a>\u00a0found that ocean temperatures reached record highs in 2019, and this is not an anomaly: The past five years have also been the warmest for the oceans since reliable measurements began in the 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a big deal because the oceans absorb more than 90 percent of the extra heat generated by the burning of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/fossil-fuels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fossil fuels<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The oceans are really what tells you how fast the Earth is warming,&#8221; study co-author and University of St. Thomas professor John Abraham told\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/jan\/13\/ocean-temperatures-hit-record-high-as-rate-of-heating-accelerates?CMP=fb_gu&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Facebook&amp;fbclid=IwAR2MyeE63i_Fc0wqEBaakT_xfZrTi5ik22NtqvAxw7OZndZFQwcR_h-Nbyg#Echobox=1578935325\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a>. &#8220;Using the oceans, we see a continued, uninterrupted and accelerating warming rate of planet Earth. This is dire news.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The oceans in 2019 were 0.075 degrees Celsius above the average for 1981 to 2010, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2020-01\/ioap-row010920.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a>. This means they have absorbed 228,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 joules of heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That&#8217;s a lot of zeros indeed,&#8221; lead author Lijing Cheng conceded in the press release. &#8220;To make it easier to understand, I did a calculation. The Hiroshima atom-bomb exploded with an energy of about 63,000,000,000,000 Joules.
