{"id":7120,"date":"2019-12-11T08:34:39","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T05:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=7120"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:45","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:45","slug":"food-prices-jump-sharply-on-rainfall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/12\/11\/food-prices-jump-sharply-on-rainfall\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Prices Jump Sharply On Rainfall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Irene Mugo <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food prices in Nyeri,Kenya have shot up due to the ongoing rainfall that has left farmers grappling with massive crop loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently most horticulture growing counties in central Kenya region are experiencing cold weather due to the downpour which is unfavourable for the crops to flourish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Potato prices have gone up by 38 percent for a 17-kilogramme bucket from Sh400 last month to Sh550.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tomatoes have also increased from Sh60 to Sh80 and the price is expected to rise higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTomatoes and potatoes are greatly affected since they are sensitive to rains and changing weather conditions,\u201d said Mr Kariuki Gatiba, a trader at Nyeri Town open market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A kilo of onions is retailing at Sh100 up from Sh80.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traders are relying on locally produced onions compared to previously where there was an oversupply from Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capsicums are selling at Sh120 a kilo, from Sh80 representing a 50 percent increase in the last one month while customers are paying Sh10 more for carrots at Sh60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peas and French beans are selling at Sh100 from Sh80 while courgettes are priced Sh120 up from Sh80.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fruits such as pawpaw and passion fruit have also been low in supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessdailyafrica.com\/markets\/marketnews\/Food-prices-jump-sharply-on-rainfall\/3815534-5380892-dc2llv\/index.html\">Read more&#8230; <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Irene Mugo Food prices in Nyeri,Kenya have shot up due to the ongoing rainfall that has left farmers grappling with massive crop loss.
