{"id":6990,"date":"2019-12-05T09:26:19","date_gmt":"2019-12-05T06:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6990"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:44","slug":"women-at-risk-of-more-violence-due-to-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/12\/05\/women-at-risk-of-more-violence-due-to-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Women At Risk Of More Violence Due To Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Moraa Obiria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loss of natural resources as a result of climate change is exposing more women and girls to gender-based violence (GBV), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2019 document that Unep has released for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence speaks of the need to build the resilience of women, men, girls and boys to cope with shocks of climate change and degradation of natural resources in order to mitigate GBV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Crop Failure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gender and environment outlook document states that\namong other factors, the extremes of changing weather patterns associated with\ncrop failure push families to marry off their girls as a way of tackling\nhousehold food insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This, the report states, leads to early marriages, the practice of female genital cutting and denying girls a right to an education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The document recognizes that across societies, climate\nchange affects women and men differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women are often responsible for gathering and producing\nfood, collecting water and sourcing fuel for heating and cooking.
