{"id":6986,"date":"2019-12-05T09:00:18","date_gmt":"2019-12-05T06:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6986"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:44","slug":"extreme-heat-hitting-rich-and-poor-harder-global-climate-index-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/12\/05\/extreme-heat-hitting-rich-and-poor-harder-global-climate-index-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Extreme Heat Hitting Rich And Poor Harder, Global Climate Index Shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Reuters&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worsening heatwaves are taking a heavier toll on rich as\nwell as poor countries, according to an annual ranking that measures the damage\ndone by extreme weather to human life and economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Global Climate Risk Index, published on Wednesday by\nenvironmental think-tank Germanwatch, rated Japan as the most-affected country\nin 2018, while Germany was in third position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of the industrialised nations were hit hard by\nheatwaves and drought that year, as was India &#8211; in fifth position &#8211; which\nsuffered water shortages, crop failures and riots, Germanwatch said in a\nreport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRecent science has confirmed the long-established link\nbetween climate change and the frequency and severity of extreme heat,\u201d it\nadded in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, a severe summer heatwave in Japan killed 138 people\nand caused more than 70,000 people to be hospitalised with heat stroke and\nexhaustion, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in Germany, the period from April-July 2018 was the\nhottest ever recorded in the country, leading to the deaths of more than 1,200\npeople.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across Europe, extreme heat spells are now up to 100 times\nmore likely than a century ago, according to the report.
