President Uhuru Kenyatta outlined four pillars that would\nform the core focus of his leadership during his final term as president of the\nRepublic of Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The so-called \u2018Big Four\u2019 are \u2018food security, affordable\nhousing, manufacturing and universal healthcare\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No material progress has been registered on any of these\npillars at least going by the prevailing realities across our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was the president\u2019s philosophical underpinning in\n\u201cselecting\u201d these four pillars for concentrated focus by his government?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why wasn\u2019t the fight against corruption included as one\nof the major agenda items?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have been able to peer in to the minds of Kenya\u2019s\nformer presidents through their writings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founding president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta authored \u2018Facing\nMount Kenya\u2019 where he elucidated and extolled the Kikuyu culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a pivotal work of literature that still graces\nour book shelves, although now mainly read by ageing scholars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former president Mwai Kibaki played a role together with\nthe immortal Tom Mboya in the authorship of Sessional Paper Number 10 of 1965.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former president Daniel arap Moi wrote his Nyayo\nPhilosophy where he emphasized on districts as the focal point for development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current leadership is yet to elucidate any strong\nviews or conceptual underpinnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corruption is rampant and threatening to destroy the very\nfoundations of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Service delivery across all governmental agencies,\nnotably the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), are sub-optimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tribalism plays a central role in the determination of\ngovernment appointments; meritocracy is never a primary criterion in the\nappointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state is partisan and not playing a unifying role as the country is getting torn into shreds by the \u2018political hyenas\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nation is being weighed down by \u2018infinite debt\u2019.\nPerhaps in the future Kenyans should consider conducting a referendum to\ndetermine whether we should borrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A digital referendum should be pretty easy given the high\ndigital absorption across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The social media, the press and the intelligentsia should\nsharpen their pens and use them to combat runaway corruption, snowballing debt,\ncorrosive tribalism and pervasive ineptitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This evil quartet should be fought viciously if we are to\npreserve the sovereignty of our nation and hand over a respectable and\ndignified country to the future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
