Akure\u2019s\npopulation growth is explained by two factors. Ondo State is a part of the\nNiger Delta, the oil-producing region of Nigeria. In 2006, Akure was classified\nas a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclg.org\/en\/issues\/millennium-development-goals\">Millennium\nDevelopment City<\/a>, as part of its commitment to the eight&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/topics\/millennium_development_goals\/about\/en\/\">development\ngoals<\/a>&nbsp;UN member states agreed to achieve by 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Akure\u2019s population was 360,268 in 2006, according to that\nyear\u2019s National Population and Housing Census. Using a yearly percentage\nincrease of 3.2%, the population of the city in 2019 would be 559,940 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, several infrastructure projects have been\ncarried out in the city in a bid to improve the lives of the people who live\nthere. But these developments have been done mainly in a top-down way. This\nflies in the face of a growing global trend which has seen community\nparticipation take root. Examples include projects in South Africa, Botswana,\nJapan, Canada, and the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This practice is growing globally because people directly\naffected by developments are increasingly being recognised as an essential part\nof the process. It ensures that the infrastructure projects truly meet the\nneeds of the beneficiaries.
