It is the site of the Green City Kigali project\nthat is expected to cost between $4-5bn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An estimated 30,000 housing\nunits will be developed to benefit around 150,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to those behind the\nproject, the futuristic city \u201c\u2026 will integrate green building and design,\nefficient and renewable energy, recycling and inclusive living, homegrown\nsolutions and local construction materials\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The beauty of the project is\nthat no one will be moved to give way to the development. In the past, people\nhave been reluctantly expropriated to give way to development projects creating\nseveral judicial tugs-of-war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many such cases, decisions\nwere made unilaterally without consulting owners of the properties or even\nexplaining to them the benefits that will come with the project. The Green City\nproject is not making that same mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stakeholders of the\nproject will hold consultations on all aspects of the idea that will not only\ncontribute to conserving our environment; it is also expected to create at\nleast 16,000 jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a&nbsp;grandiose\nproject that falls into the \u201cDream Big\u201d category that this country is known\nfor. Saturday will be the first step in pulling it off, but the real\ngroundbreaking begins in the next few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many were sceptical at first that the project would never get off the paper stage given its costly and high-tech nature.
