{"id":6809,"date":"2019-11-26T10:26:14","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T07:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6809"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:43","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:43","slug":"more-should-be-done-to-empower-kenyan-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/11\/26\/more-should-be-done-to-empower-kenyan-women\/","title":{"rendered":"More Should Be Done To Empower Kenyan Women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By\nCharles Mwirigi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite commanding a\nnumerical majority, as confirmed by the just-released 2019 census results by\nKenya National Bureau of Statistics(KNBS), Kenyan females\u2019 still hold minority\ninfluence socio-economically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an\nideal situation, with the clear majority in numbers, making up 50.5 percent of\nthe population, according to latest figures from the census, the women of Kenya\nwould be having huge socio-economic influence. Still, this has remained a pipe\ndream, massive efforts invested in this endeavour notwithstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking\nthe agriculture sector, for instance, points towards a grim situation of inequality\nfor the women. According to the KNBS, women provide 80 percent of the farm\nlabour and manage 40 percent of the smallholder farms in Kenya, yet they only\nown roughly one (1) percent of agricultural land and receive just 10 percent of\navailable credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This\nis because of the magnitude of challenges that women have had strewn on their\npath to socio-economic empowerment from time immemorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\ngreatest economic challenge has been their limited access to credit from\nfinancial institutions to start and scale up a thriving business and create\nwealth. This is mostly due to lack of collateral limiting their access to\ncredit. Then there is limited access to entrepreneurship training to enhance\ntheir chances of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even\nfor political leadership, which is a game of numbers, increasing the proportion\nof female representation has remained a challenge despite deliberate efforts to\nboost the same by creating special women representative seats in Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over\ntime, some gains have been made and the status of Kenyan women has been on the\nimproving trend.
