{"id":6795,"date":"2019-11-26T08:48:27","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T05:48:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6795"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:42","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:42","slug":"our-disaster-response-and-planning-wanting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/11\/26\/our-disaster-response-and-planning-wanting\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Disaster Response And Planning Wanting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Daily Nation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The heavy\nrains that have pounded the country for the past few weeks have precipitated a\nhumanitarian crisis of monumental proportions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deaths\nof more than 50 people in West Pokot from raging floods that destroyed homes\nand caused landslides that buried residents is the worst natural tragedy in\nrecent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But we are\nnot safe yet. More cases of devastation and death are being reported across the\ncountry \u2014 including the central, coast and northeastern regions \u2014 with experts\nwarning of possible worse occurrences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worse is\nthe fact that regions that ordinarily do not receive heavy rains and experience\nmassive flooding are heavily affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meteorological department predicts more downpours until next month, defying the cyclic weather trends where short rains come in October and November in relatively fewer quantities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time\naround, they are taking longer and coming in a deluge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rescue Efforts <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the rains have once again exposed our inability to manage the crisis. The deaths in West Pokot could have been minimised with proper disaster preparedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was\nno proper warning about heavy showers and devastating consequences. It is\ntroubling that several days after the calamity hit, many people cannot be\naccounted for, presumably as they may have perished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday,\ntop government officials, led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang\u2019i,\ncould not reach the village where dozens of people met their cruel death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Providing\ninterventions, including food, clothing and medicines, is simply impossible.\nFamilies have been thrown out to the elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All that\nshows that many parts of the country are inaccessible and, when calamity\nstrikes, rescue operations are heavily constrained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\nshould be addressed.
