{"id":6775,"date":"2019-11-25T10:49:52","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T07:49:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6775"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:42","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:42","slug":"smallholders-feel-the-heat-of-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/11\/25\/smallholders-feel-the-heat-of-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Smallholders Feel The Heat Of Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Daily\nNation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Essong\u2019olo\nvillage, in the heart of Vihiga County, is just like any other hamlet, with\nmost households engaging in subsistence farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaiah\nBitoolo is one of the residents of this village and, like many of his\nneighbours, he keeps a herd of five indigenous cattle in a makeshift\nzero-grazing unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years ago,\nzero-grazing of such animals was unheard-of in the village as the animals\ngrazed in a free-range style along the rural roads, in open fields and along\nriverbanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThings\nare changing fast,\u201d says the 44-year-old farmer. \u201cI was forced to zero-graze\nthe animals because for the better part of this year, there was little grass in\nthe fields where we used to graze them due to little rains.
