To maintain mantle of leadership in\nthe global arena, they say, the world\u2019s most powerful country needs to reassess\nits positions on global initiatives like the Paris Climate Accord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is due to the fact that China\nis currently the world\u2019s largest producer of wind and solar energy and the\nlargest investor in green energy projects. It\u2019s home for the world\u2019s six\nlargest solar manufacturing companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the bitter truth is that\ndeveloping countries stand to lose the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Paris Agreement aims at\nstrengthening the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a\nglobal temperature below 2 degrees in this century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Kenya, for example, a slight rise\nin temperature above 2 degrees could cause increase in seawater capable of\nsubmerging Mombasa County and 17 per cent of coastal areas, according to the\nKenya National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) 2018-2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Article 9 of the Paris Agreement\nthat entered into force on November 4, 2016, stipulates that developed country\nParties such as US, China, Russia, India and Japan, among others, shall provide\nfinancial resources to assist developing country parties like Kenya to put in\nplace appropriate financial flows, new technology and capacity building\nframeworks in line with their own national objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FUNDING<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It says that $100 billion (Sh10\ntrillion) in public and private resources will need to be raised each year from\n2020 to finance projects that enable developing countries, which are hit hard\nby the impacts of climate change such as drought, floods, diseases among other\nstressors to build resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya is one of the countries that\nare supposed to benefit from part of the Sh10 trillion funding to build\ninfrastructures that will, for instance, cushion people against the ravaging\nfloods that have claimed about 20 lives in the last two months, and help the\ncountry become food secure among other capacities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United States’ withdrawal from the\nClimate Accord is a hard slap on the face of Kenya and other developing\ncountries because it is the world\u2019s second-biggest emitter of greenhouse gases,\nbehind China, and is by far the largest cumulative greenhouse gas emitter in\nhistory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With US pulling out of the accord,\nit means that the likelihood of mobilizing the required amount is next to\nimpossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to World Bank statistics,\nevery American is responsible for 16.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RESPONSIBILITY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, each Kenyan is\nresponsible for 0.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The difference is so huge given\nthat Kenya\u2019s population is only 14 per cent of the United State\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
