From a chance finding in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/historic_figures\/fleming_alexander.shtml\">1928<\/a>&nbsp;to the modern day, millions of people have benefited from these life-saving medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, the world marks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/world-antibiotic-awareness-week\/world-antibiotic-awareness-week-2019\/landing\">World Antibiotic Awareness Week<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 both a celebration of the remarkable contribution that antibiotics have made to global public health and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/antibioticguardian.com\/south-africa\/\">clarion call<\/a>&nbsp;to action to ensure their continued usefulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case for a clarion call is clear: overuse and misuse of antibiotics in humans, animals, and the food production industry has seen&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/antibiotic-resistance\">bacterial resistance to antibiotics surge<\/a>&nbsp;in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without antibiotics, treatments that we take for granted for common diseases such as pneumonia or urinary tract infections will be lost. Effectively, we are seeing the end of modern medicine slowly being played out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But we can act together to alter the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How it works and why it matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans and bacteria are symbionts \u2013 we live in a close physical association, to the advantage of both. Every human is host to trillions of bacteria that live in our gut, on our skin, and in other body areas.
