\u201cYou will understand when you are\nolder.\u201d This is a common phrase among every young person below the age of 18\nyears around the globe. A phrase that has limited the capability of most\nindividuals and infringed on the rights of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 20th<\/sup> is an\nimportant date \u2013 World Children’s Day! First established in 1954 as Universal\nChildren’s Day to promote international togetherness and awareness among\nchildren and the key to improving children’s welfare.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 1990, World Children\u2019s Day\nmarks the anniversary of the date that the UN General Assembly adopted both the\nDeclaration and the convention on children\u2019s rights. These rights are stated as\nfollows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. A child should enjoy social\nprotection and be given opportunities, facilities, and means to enable\ndevelopment physically, mentally, morally and spiritually in conditions of\nfreedom and dignity.<\/li>
  2. A child shall be entitled from\nbirth to a name and nationality. The child shall be entitled to grow and develop\nin health and shall have the right to adequate nutrition, housing, recreation,\nand medical services. <\/li>
  3. A child who is physically, mentally\nor socially handicapped shall be given special treatment, education, and care.<\/li>
  4. A child needs love and understanding.\nAnd shall have the right to grow up in an atmosphere of affection and security.<\/li>
  5. A child is entitled to receive\neducation and an opportunity to develop abilities to overcome useful members of\nsociety. The child shall in all circumstances be among the first to receive\nprotection and relief in times of emergency and disaster.<\/li>
  6. A child shall be protected against\nall forms of neglect, cruelty, and exploitation and shall not be admitted to\nemployment before an appropriate minimum age.<\/li>
  7. A child shall be protected from\npractices which may foster racial, religious or other forms of discrimination\nand shall be brought up in a spirit of understanding, tolerance, friendship\namong peoples, peace and universal brotherhood.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    This day offers each of us an\ninspirational entry-point to advocate, promote and celebrate children\u2019s rights,\ntranslating into dialogues and actions that will build a better world for\nchildren. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Mothers and fathers, teachers,\nnurses and doctors, government leaders and civil society activists, religious\nand community elders, corporate moguls and media professionals, as well as\nyoung people and children themselves, can play an important part in making\nWorld Children’s Day relevant for their societies, communities, and nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Over the past 30 years, children’s\nlives have been transformed. More than 50 percent reduction in child mortality\nrate. The proportion of undernourished children has halved since 19190. Unlike\nin 1990, 2.6 billion more people have access to cleaner drinking water today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, urgent action is needed to\nmake sure every child, has every right. There is still a staggering number of\nchildren and youths who are out of school. 650 million girls are married off\nbefore their 18th<\/sup> birthday. 1 in 4 children will still live in areas\nwith extremely limited water resources by 2040 \u2013 a need that should be\naddressed sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Today and now on this anniversary\nday, it is extra special. It is a time to celebrate and demand action for\nchildren\u2019s rights. They have become part of the most comprehensive treaty for\nthe protection and support of children in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The children of today will make our\ntomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of tomorrow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
