{"id":6692,"date":"2019-11-20T09:42:51","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T06:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6692"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:42","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:42","slug":"rwanda-explores-use-of-methane-gas-for-cooking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/11\/20\/rwanda-explores-use-of-methane-gas-for-cooking\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda Explores Use Of Methane Gas For Cooking"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By&nbsp;Michel Nkurunziza<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rwandan government is set\nto commission a study on the possibilities of using methane gas for\ncooking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Government\u2019s plan, which\nwas disclosed at a meeting with development partners on Tuesday, is informed by\nthe fact that most Rwandans still rely on wood fuel for cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials at the Ministry of\nEnvironment said the move could help reduce reliance on wood fuel from 80 per\ncent to 40 per cent by 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overreliance on wood fuel\nconstitutes a health concern, causing respiratory diseases due to air\npollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Ministry of\nHealth, more than three million Rwandans suffer from respiratory problems every\nyear, of which 13 per cent is caused by air pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, deaths linked to\npoor air quality reached 12,000, the ministry says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 9,040 deaths out of\n12,000 were due to indoor air pollution and 2,960 due to ambient air pollution,\nstatistics indicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eng. Coletha Ruhamya, the\nDirector-General of Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), said that\nexploring the possibilities of using methane gas for cooking was a timely\nintervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have identified sectors\nwhich stakeholders can put in their efforts to protect the environment and\nfight against climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMethane gas does not only\nprovide electricity, it can be used for other purposes such as cooking as well.\nBut we need a feasibility study for that and those who can implement the\nproject,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was speaking while\npresenting Rwanda\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newtimes.co.rw\/rwanda\/rwanda-launches-national-plan-paris-agreement-climate-change\">action\nplan on combating global warming&nbsp;<\/a>to development partners in\nKigali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan was developed by the\nGovernment of Rwanda as a country-driven climate action plan to implement the\nParis Agreement on Climate Change.
