{"id":6683,"date":"2019-11-20T09:24:03","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T06:24:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6683"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:42","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:42","slug":"why-kenyan-farmers-are-struggling-to-import-produce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/11\/20\/why-kenyan-farmers-are-struggling-to-import-produce\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Kenyan Farmers Are Struggling To Import Produce"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By\nDaily Nation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a\nfarmer of French beans, Josphat Mutisya has on several occasions had to contend\nwith losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nsmall-scale farmer from Kabaa, Machakos County, is an exporter of French beans,\nbut sometimes he has failed to meet the international food safety standards on\npests and diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutisya\nuses water from the polluted River Athi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his\nproduce to qualify for export, it must have a pest and disease tolerance of\nbetween zero and five per cent rust and between zero and five per cent\nanthracnose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During an\ninterview at his farm he said: \u201cWhen they (horticultural exporters) find that\nthey are contaminated, they just dump the produce and we are not paid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added:\n\u201cSometimes they can give us credit notes to cater for the cost of\ntransportation and other costs when they find that they cannot export your\nproduct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During one\nof the occasions, he was told that his French beans had E. coli and could not\nbe exported.
