Over\n400,000 died. The vast majority \u2013 around 90% \u2013 were in Africa, where many are\nall too familiar with the devastating impact of the disease. Young children and\npregnant women are the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protective measures\ncan help significantly to reduce the burden. This includes spraying with\ninsecticides and using mosquito nets. But 100% coverage using these methods is\nimpossible. Until the disease is eradicated, availability of effective\ntreatments is critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why drugs\nare critical to managing the disease. But even here new challenges are\nbeginning to emerge. For example, in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jul\/23\/drug-resistant-malaria-parasites-spreading-aggressively-across-south-east-asia\">South\nEast Asia<\/a>, drug resistance to current first-line treatment has become a\ncause for concern. It threatens progress made in recent years against malaria.\nThe only way to overcome this threat is to discover new agents against malaria\nthat are safe, effective and affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A collaborative\neffort between the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.h3d.uct.ac.za\/\">University of Cape\nTown\u2019s drug discovery and development centre<\/a>&nbsp;and the Swiss-based\nnon-profit organisation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmv.org\/\">Medicines for\nMalaria Venture<\/a>&nbsp;has spent the past ten years working this. The project\nis supported by the South African Medical Research Council and the country\u2019s\nDepartment of Science and Innovation. The aim is to discover and develop\nmedicines to help tackle the burden of the disease in endemic countries and\nsupport malaria eradication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collaboration is\nalso contributing to the development of sustainable research capacity in\nAfrican countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The joint projects\narising from this collaboration embrace multidisciplinary activities. One\nexample involves screening activities to identify exciting new chemical\nstarting points.
