Population growth\nrates continue to pose lingering challenges to development efforts on the\ncontinent. The population of Africa is expected to roughly\ndouble by 2050<\/a>. This will add 1.2 billion people to Africa\u2019s 2019 population\nof 1.3\nbillion people<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s driving\npopulation growth on the continent, and what can be done to slow the trend, is\none of the subjects that will be addressed this week at the 8th African Population Conference<\/a> in\nEntebbe in Uganda. A focus of the debate will be the role of behavioural\nnudges<\/a> \u2013 interventions designed to change people\u2019s behaviour \u2013 and\nincentives in achieving demographic transition in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the table will be\nthe question: can, and should, incentives and nudges be used to effect changes\nin fertility patterns on the continent? Some of the issues that will be\nconsidered include: the ethical implications of incentivising behaviour;\nwhether incentives and nudges work, and under what conditions; which specific\nincentives and nudges are recommended; who incentives should target, and why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These questions can\nbest be answered by considering the key drivers of population growth in Africa.\nThe main one is high\nfertility<\/a> which is driven by multiple\nfactors<\/a>, including high desired family size, low levels of use of modern\ncontraceptives, and high levels of adolescent childbearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
