{"id":6539,"date":"2019-11-13T09:43:42","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T06:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6539"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:41","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:41","slug":"why-africas-energy-future-matters-to-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/11\/13\/why-africas-energy-future-matters-to-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Africa\u2019s Energy Future Matters To The World"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Esi Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Africa is set to become increasingly influential in shaping\nglobal energy trends over the next two decades as it undergoes the largest\nprocess of urbanization the world has ever seen, according to a new report from\nthe International Energy Agency.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/africa2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Africa Energy Outlook 2019<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;finds that current\npolicy and investment plans in African countries are not enough to meet the\nenergy needs of the continent\u2019s young and rapidly growing population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, 600 million people in Africa do not have access to\nelectricity and 900 million lack access to clean cooking facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of people living in Africa\u2019s cities is expected to\nexpand by 600 million over the next two decades, much higher than the increase\nexperienced by China\u2019s cities during the country\u2019s 20-year economic and energy\nboom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Africa\u2019s overall population is set to exceed 2 billion before\n2040, accounting for half of the global increase over that period. These\nprofound changes will drive the continent\u2019s economic growth, infrastructure\ndevelopment and, in turn, energy demand, which is projected to rise 60 per cent\nto around 1,320 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2040, based on current\npolicies and plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new report is the IEA\u2019s most comprehensive and detailed work\nto date on energy across the African continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key report findings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current plans would leave 530 million people on the continent still without access to electricity in 2030.
