{"id":6431,"date":"2019-11-07T08:42:47","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T05:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6431"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:40","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:40","slug":"rooting-for-the-environment-in-times-of-conflict-and-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/11\/07\/rooting-for-the-environment-in-times-of-conflict-and-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Rooting For The Environment In Times Of Conflict And War"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UN Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eighteen years ago, on 5 November 2001, the United\nNations General Assembly&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/undocs.org\/A\/RES\/56\/4\">declared<\/a>&nbsp;6\nNovember the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the\nEnvironment in War and Armed Conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the protection afforded by several legal\ninstruments, the environment continues to be the silent victim of armed\nconflicts worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public concern regarding the targeting and use of the\nenvironment during wartime first peaked during the Viet Nam War. The use of the\ntoxic herbicide Agent Orange, and the resulting massive deforestation and\nchemical contamination it caused, sparked an international outcry leading to\nthe creation of two new international legal instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un-documents.net\/enmod.htm\">Environmental Modification Convention<\/a>\u00a0was adopted in 1976 to prohibit the use of environmental modification techniques as a means of warfare.
