{"id":6234,"date":"2019-10-30T08:49:37","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T05:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6234"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:38","slug":"rwandas-first-electric-car-hits-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/10\/30\/rwandas-first-electric-car-hits-the-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda&#8217;s First Electric Car Hits the Road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By Collins Mwai<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric vehicles\nwill debut in Rwanda today through a partnership between Volkswagen and Siemens\nunder a pilot project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vehicles, to be\nlaunched in the presence of Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente, are dubbed e-Golf.\nRwanda is the first African country where Volkswagen is testing electric cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today&#8217;s launch will\nsee four of the cars unveiled on the local market with one charging station at\nthe Volkswagen facility at the Special Economic Zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials at the\nfirm say that more cars will join the market in the coming months to bring the\nnumber to about 20 cars and 15 charging stations across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Siemens role in the\npartnership involves setting up charging stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michaella\nRugwizangoga, the Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen&#8217;s operations in Rwanda,\nsaid the cars are fully electric, not hybrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to today&#8217;s\nlaunch, Siemens, alongside the City of Kigali and Rwanda Energy Group,\nconducted an assessment of the city&#8217;s grid to establish whether it can support\ninnovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They said that the\nfindings showed that the city&#8217;s grid was adequate to support the charging\nstations at the launch and consequent phases of the pilot project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June this year,\nRwanda Energy Group said that there not adequate demand for energy in Rwanda\ncompared to production capacity and called for firms to consume more energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pilot project\nwill involve data collection and analysis on aspects such as performance of the\nelectric cars, reception by consumers, consumer trends and suitable conditions\nfor the cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nadege Gaju, the\nHead of Sales and Marketing, said that it&#8217;s this data that will inform the\nconsequent rollout of the project&#8217;s other phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201910290035.html\">Read more\u2026<\/a> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Collins Mwai Electric vehicles will debut in Rwanda today through a partnership between Volkswagen and Siemens under a pilot project.
