{"id":6127,"date":"2019-10-24T09:24:34","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T06:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6127"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:38","slug":"nobel-prize-in-economics-experiments-are-no-substitute-for-diagnosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/10\/24\/nobel-prize-in-economics-experiments-are-no-substitute-for-diagnosis\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobel Prize In Economics: Experiments Are No Substitute For Diagnosis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By<\/strong> <strong>Sam Jones<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sitting in front of a class of 20 young students at a\nprivate technical-vocational college on the edge of Maputo, the capital city of\nMozambique, I cannot help but reflect on the fervent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.concertedaction.com\/2019\/10\/18\/fine-heterodox-critiques-of-the-2019-economic-nobel-prize\/\">social\nmedia debates<\/a>&nbsp;regarding the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences award of\nthe 2019 Nobel Prize in economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The committee made a worthy choice. It recognised the\ngrowing importance of practical experimental work in the field of development.\nEven so, it is not self-evident that the bulk of gains in knowledge that will\nsupport more effective social and economic policies in the developing world are\ngoing to start and end with experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My engagement with technical students in Mozambique is part\nof a baseline survey of their \u2018school to work\u2019 experiences. We are collecting\ninformation on the young students\u2019 backgrounds. We are doing some short\npsychometric tests and asking about their expectations for the future. Over the\ncourse of next year, we will be following up with them, plus the rest of the\nplanned sample of 2,000 final year students, to find out what kind of work they\nhave been able to get, or what else they are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those familiar with the challenges of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/programs\/africa-regional-studies\/publication\/youth-employment-in-sub-saharan-africa\">youth employment in sub-Saharan Africa<\/a>\u00a0will recognise the relevance of this type of study. As elsewhere, Mozambique\u2019s demographic structure means that hundreds of thousands of young people are entering the labour market every year, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/10.7864\/j.ctt1hfr23q.8\">good jobs seem few and far between<\/a>. Aside from anecdotes and \u2018guesstimates\u2019, little is known about what is really happening in the labour market here, or about the pathways leading to different job outcomes.
