{"id":6121,"date":"2019-10-24T09:17:24","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T06:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6121"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:37","slug":"more-than-100-elephants-die-in-botswana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/10\/24\/more-than-100-elephants-die-in-botswana\/","title":{"rendered":"More Than 100 Elephants Die In Botswana"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Dickens Olewe and\nEmmanuel Onyango<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 100 elephants have died in Botswana in the past\ntwo months because of a suspected anthrax outbreak, as well as a lack of\nrainfall, wildlife officials have said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parts of southern Africa have been hit by a severe drought, which has also led to the deaths of 55 elephants in the famous Hwange National Park, in Botswana&#8217;s neighbour Zimbabwe, over the past two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 10 elephants were found dead in Botswana this\nweek, and their carcasses will be burnt to prevent the anthrax infection from\nspreading, Botswana&#8217;s wildlife authority said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Preliminary investigations suggest the elephants are\ndying from anthrax whilst some died from drought effects,&#8221; a Department of\nWildlife and National Parks statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Due to the severe drought, elephants end up ingesting\nsoil while grazing and get exposed to the anthrax bacteria spore,&#8221; it\nadded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthrax is caused by bacillus anthracis and can be deadly but usually, it does not spread easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It largely survives as spores that hideaway in the soil for years before entering an animal through a cut or wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many tourists visit Botswana&#8217;s game parks to see its\nwildlife.
