{"id":6063,"date":"2019-10-22T10:08:28","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T07:08:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=6063"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:37","slug":"rwanda-bans-all-single-use-plastics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/10\/22\/rwanda-bans-all-single-use-plastics\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda Bans All Single-Use Plastics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By allAfrica<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rwanda becomes the first regional country to issue a\ncomplete ban on all single-use plastics and retailers have three months to\nclear their stocks and find alternatives, while industrial users and producers\nof single-use plastics have a two-year deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ban affects all plastic carry bags and other\nsingle-use plastic items such as wrappers, plastic containers, bottles, straws,\nplastic cutlery, folders, and balloons. Plastic duty-free bags are not\nauthorized to be brought into the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country first adopted a law against plastic bags in\n2008 and a new law gazetted in August this year adds to the list of other types\nof plastics deemed equally harmful to the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2019 law is extensive and prohibits the\nmanufacturing, importation, use and sale of plastic carry bags and single-use\nplastic items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Failure to adhere to the law will attract hefty penalties\nor even revocation of trade licences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The new law is intended to check unnecessary\nconsumption and disposal of single-use plastic items, which are harmful to the\nenvironment,&#8221; said Vincent Biruta, the Minister of Environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Producers of single-use plastics have been duly\ninformed in a timely manner and will be required to adjust.
