But success in leaving no one behind will remain elusive if we do not target the people who are furthest behind first,\u201d the Secretary-General said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Guterres noted that the focus of this year\u2019s\ncommemoration is on \u201cacting together to empower children, their families and\ncommunities to end poverty\u201d as it falls during the 30th anniversary of the UN\nConvention on the Rights of the Child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said children are more than twice as likely to live in\nextreme poverty than adults, condemning them to \u201clifelong disadvantage\u201d while\nalso perpetuating \u201can intergenerational transfer of deprivation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, children, today will live with what the UN chief described as \u201cthe devastating consequences of climate change\u201d unless action is taken now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Guterres pointed out that girls are at particular\nrisk, but they are also a force for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor every additional year a girl remains in school, her\naverage income over a lifetime increases, her chances of being married early\ndecrease, and there are clear health and education benefits for her children,\nmaking it a key factor in breaking the cycle of poverty,\u201d he said.
