{"id":5993,"date":"2019-10-17T10:22:30","date_gmt":"2019-10-17T07:22:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5993"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:37","slug":"competition-pushes-down-price-of-cement-in-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/10\/17\/competition-pushes-down-price-of-cement-in-uganda\/","title":{"rendered":"Competition Pushes Down Price of Cement in Uganda"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Halima Abdallah<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nentry of Simba Cement and Kampala Cement has increased competition among\nmanufacturers in Uganda, driving down prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\n50-kilogramme bag now retails at an average price of Ush28,000 ($7.5) from\nUsh39,000 ($10.8), with some brands costing even lower.<br>\nHima Cement and Tororo Cement have been dominant market players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ndrop in prices has been long coming following last year\u2019s drastic measures by\nMinistry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives to fast-track licensing of new\ncement manufacturers. Removal of 10 per cent import duty on clinker has also\nlowered production costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some\nmanufacturers rely on clinker as a raw material in their cement production\nwhile Tororo and Hima rely on pozollana mining in Kasese, Kamwenge and Tororo, where\nthey mine their raw material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides,\nthe government had threatened to allow imported cement to come into the country\non a special duty if the two major manufacturers, Hima and Tororo cement, did\nnot increase production to bring down prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ntwo companies had cut production, citing high production costs occasioned by\nhigh electricity tariffs and taxes on imported clinker\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeastafrican.co.ke\/business\/Competition-pushes-down-price-of-cement-in-Uganda\/2560-5312002-106apj2\/index.html\">Read more&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Halima Abdallah The entry of Simba Cement and Kampala Cement has increased competition among manufacturers in Uganda, driving down prices.
