{"id":5957,"date":"2019-10-16T08:20:53","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T05:20:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5957"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:36","slug":"dealers-in-single-use-plastics-given-three-month-ultimatum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/10\/16\/dealers-in-single-use-plastics-given-three-month-ultimatum\/","title":{"rendered":"Dealers In Single-Use Plastics Given Three-Month Ultimatum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By&nbsp;Michel Nkurunziza<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Government has granted a\nthree-month grace period to importers and retailers of single-use plastic\nitems&nbsp;to phase them out before starting to&nbsp;penalize them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vincent Biruta, the Minister\nfor Environment,&nbsp;made the&nbsp;announcement during&nbsp;a&nbsp;news\nconference on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The items include single-use\nplastic packaging materials for food and other products, plastic straws,\nplastic spoons and forks, plastic knives, plastic cups and dishes, balloons\namong others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the minister\nexplained that single-use plastic bottles are not targeted in the\ncrackdown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move is part of\nimplementing the law relating to the prohibition of manufacturing, importation,\nuse and sale of plastic carry bags and single-use plastic items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The single-use plastic items\nare said&nbsp;to pollute the environment such as blocking water channels and\npreventing water from penetrating into the&nbsp;soil, thus triggering flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2017 marine environment report confirmed that many marine biodiversities such as fish and birds die from consuming plastic items, Biruta said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Globally, Birura says,\nresearch shows that 300 million tonnes of plastics are manufactured every year,\nincluding five billions of plastic bags and so many millions of plastic bottles\nwhile half of all plastics are single-use items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biruta said that products such as food, drugs, and medical equipment that are seen to lose quality if they do no use plastic materials as the packaging will be tolerated but the businesses have to sign an agreement with the ministry for their management, including taking them to recycling plants\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newtimes.co.rw\/news\/dealers-single-use-plastics-given-three-month-ultimatum\">Read more>><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By&nbsp;Michel Nkurunziza The Government has granted a three-month grace period to importers and retailers of single-use plastic items&nbsp;to phase them out before starting to&nbsp;penalize them.
