{"id":5907,"date":"2019-10-14T10:04:07","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T07:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5907"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:36","slug":"boat-made-of-recycled-plastic-and-flip-flops-inspires-fight-for-cleaner-seas-along-african-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/10\/14\/boat-made-of-recycled-plastic-and-flip-flops-inspires-fight-for-cleaner-seas-along-african-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Boat Made Of Recycled Plastic And Flip-Flops Inspires Fight For Cleaner Seas Along African Coast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By UN News<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>After completing a historic 500km journey from the Kenyan island of Lamu to the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, the world\u2019s first-ever traditional \u201cdhow\u201d sailing boat made entirely from recycled plastic, known as the\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/flipflopi-docks-zanzibar-final-stop-marine-litter\"><strong>Flipflopi<\/strong><\/a><strong>, has successfully raised awareness of the need to overcome one of the world\u2019s biggest environmental challenges: plastic pollution.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Flipflopi Project was co-founded by Kenyan tour operator Ben\nMorison in 2016, and the ground-breaking dhow was built by master craftsmen Ali\nSkanda, and a team of volunteers using 10 tonnes of recycled plastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boat gets its name from the 30,000 recycled flip-flops used\nto decorate its multi-coloured hull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Plastics make up 80 per cent of all ocean litter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN Environment agency\u2019s (UNEP)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanseas.org\/impact\/australia-joins-clean-seas-and-pledges-recycle-or-compost-70-cent-all-plastic-packaging-2025?_ga=2.265478921.746705735.1549912922-964147317.1549912922\">Clean Seas Campaign<\/a>&nbsp;joined forces\nwith Flipflopi for the journey down the East African coast, which began on 23\nJanuary, ending on 7 February, with the aim of inspiring citizens from Africa\nand around the world to become more aware of the dangers of plastic pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Clean Seas campaign was launched in 2017 to urge\ngovernments, businesses and citizens to eliminate major sources of marine\nlitter \u2013 microplastics in cosmetics and the excessive, wasteful usage of\nsingle-use plastic \u2013 by the year 2022. Each year, more than 8 million tonnes of\nplastic ends up in the oceans, wreaking havoc on marine wildlife, fisheries and\ntourism, and costing at least $8 billion in damage to marine ecosystems.
