It was first recognized to have insecticidal properties around 1800AD\nin Asia and was used to kill ticks and various insects such as fleas and\nmosquitoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six\nindividual chemicals have active insecticidal ingredients in the pyrethrum\nextract and these compounds are called pyrethrins. Pyrethrins are often used in\nhousehold insecticides and products to control insects on pets or livestock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pyrethrum,\na broad-spectrum insecticide, affects a wide range of insects in gardens or\nfarms. It disrupts the central nervous system of all types of flying and\ncrawling insects, causing their nerve impulses to fail, eventually leading to\ntheir death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Natural\npyrethrins break down quickly in the environment, especially when exposed to\nnatural light and are less toxic than pyrethroids, which are synthetically\nengineered and last longer in the environment making them toxic to insects and\nmammals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experimental\nplanting of pyrethrum in Kenya started in 1926 and the first few tonnes were\nexported six years later.
