One way we can help\naddress these challenges is through the restoration of degraded land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restoring landscapes\u2014done\nproperly in consultation with local communities, governments and scientists\u2014has\nhuge environmental, climate mitigation but also, importantly, economic\nbenefits. It also contributes to many of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">Sustainable\nDevelopment Goals<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2015\u20132019&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegef.org\/\">Global Environment Facility<\/a>&nbsp;project,&nbsp;<em>Building\nthe foundation for forest landscape restoration at scale<\/em>, implemented by\nthe UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and executed by the World Resources\nInstitute (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/\">WRI<\/a>) in partnership with five\ncountries (Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya and Niger) is an important\ncontribution to landscape restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is no single way to\nrestore degraded land, without incorporating diverse factors\u2014cultural, social,\neconomic and topographical\u2014coming into play in different countries and\nregions,\u201d says Ulrich Piest, a UNEP ecosystems expert. \u201cWhile tree-planting is\nan important aspect of landscape restoration in many settings, it is not a\nsilver bullet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project facilitates national\ncommitments to restoration by enabling improved legal and policy conditions\nacross sectors. The big goal: to enhance the integration of trees in\nagricultural landscapes, and to restore forests in ways that support strategies\nto avoid deforestation and defragmentation and promote climate-smart\nagriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInvesting in reviving land\ndelivers tremendous socio-economic returns to protect standing forests, but\nplanning must include all relevant voices to implement effective restoration,\u201d\nhighlights WRI\u2019s Fred Stolle, the project\u2019s coordinator. \u201cInput from community\nleaders, producers, governments at different levels, scientists and technicians\nprovides critical information to make better choices and bring prosperity to\nrural communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/consultation-key-overcoming-enormous-challenges-restoring-degraded-land\">Read\nmore&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By UN Environment The world faces huge and unprecedented biodiversity and climate change challenges.
