The community\nhas a tragic place in history: on 3 June 1886, 22 Ugandan Christian converts\nwere publicly executed, on the orders of King Mwanga II of the Buganda Kingdom,\nin an attempt to ward off the influence of colonial powers with whom the\nChristians were associated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The converts were elevated to sainthood by Pope Paul VI\nin 1964.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ugandans today see those converts as martyrs. They\ncommemorate every 3 June, Martyrs Day, with weeklong celebrations that attract\nthousands of visitors from around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the week celebrants discard tons of waste,\nincluding plastic bottles, food and sewage, often throwing them into open\nchannels, where they are likely to be transported by heavy rains into the\npremises of St. Kizito High School on the outskirts of the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Waste to wealth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the students of St. Kizito have come up with ways to\ncollect that waste and transform it into wealth. They use the silt they collect\nto create and maintain the school\u2019s pavers, and they create arts and crafts\nfrom the plastic straws and bottles, which they then sell. The students also\nturn bio-waste into organic fertilizer for the school gardens, where they learn\nto grow mushrooms, onions and cabbage, and they use dried briquettes made from\nbio-waste as fuel to cook school meals. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/africarenewal\/magazine\/august-november-2019\/ugandan-students-turn-waste-wealth\">Read\nmore&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Africa Renewal Namugongo is a lush, forested community in central Uganda where tall trees are home to colorful birds and noisy monkeys.
