Wildfires in the Arctic. Deadly heatwaves. Melting ice\nsheets in Antarctica and Greenland. \u201cHurricanes of hell\u201d in the Bahamas. The news\nis grim and the warning from Nature is loud and clear: the storm is in our\nfront yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make\nno mistake: we are in the grip of an existential global environmental\nemergency. Thankfully, we know precisely what to do to about it. The age of\nfossil fuels must end, replaced by a new era of clean, renewable energy. As\nthings stand today, even our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/26895\/EGR2018_FullReport_EN.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\"><strong>most ambitious\ntargets to cut greenhouse gas emissions fail to match the severity of the\ncrisis by a factor of five.<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;We\nare careering towards the moment in time when we can no longer keep climate\nchange in check. And as Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres noted at the UN\nClimate Action Summit in New York yesterday, \u201cwe fool ourselves if we think we\ncan fool nature.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\norder to arrest this emergency, and as we decarbonize our economies, we must\nbring one of our most powerful allies into the fight now \u2013 nature.
