{"id":5494,"date":"2019-09-20T10:08:25","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T07:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5494"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:33","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:33","slug":"yatta-farmers-reclaim-wasteland-with-seed-balls-and-catapults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/09\/20\/yatta-farmers-reclaim-wasteland-with-seed-balls-and-catapults\/","title":{"rendered":"Yatta Farmers Reclaim Wasteland With Seed Balls And Catapults"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By Leopold Obi<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before\nthe residents of Kikule Village in Yatta, a semi-arid region in eastern Kenya,\ntook to planting grass and some species of local trees across their degraded\nplots, much of the area was wasted and parched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The better part of the village lay bare, with few patches of shrubs here and there, as deep gullies threaded across the undulating landscape for kilometers on end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,\npasture for livestock disappeared by the day as were the trees meant to put\nsoil erosion and sun\u2019s heat under check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With\nsurface run-offs constantly washing off top fertile soils from the farms into\nnearby streams during rainy seasons, many farmers were left struggling for\nmeaningful harvest from the remaining hard puns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dominic\nKivuvo, the chairman of Kikule village farmers, says the situation was a big\nheadache for the locals who at the time did not have a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\ncould hardly see any grass around here.
