{"id":5375,"date":"2019-09-18T10:03:29","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T07:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5375"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:33","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:33","slug":"bad-habits-drive-health-risks-among-kenyas-urban-poor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/09\/18\/bad-habits-drive-health-risks-among-kenyas-urban-poor\/","title":{"rendered":"Bad Habits Drive Health Risks Among Kenya\u2019s Urban Poor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By Frederick Wekesah<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/cardiovascular-diseases-(cvds)\">a rise<\/a>\u00a0of cardiovascular diseases in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21219158\">developing countries<\/a>\u00a0which is linked to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5134924\/\">changes in<\/a>\u00a0diet, physical activity, and obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kenyan urban population, including low-income settlements, are part of this trend. Like residents in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-heart-federation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/FINAL_Urbanization_Report_EXECUTIVE_SUMMARY_HiRes.pdf\">other low-income<\/a>\u00a0settlements, the rise in diseases can be linked to their surroundings. Poverty and stress are\u00a0prevalent\u00a0in Kenya\u2019s low-income settings which increases the behavioral risk factors for cardiovascular diseases \u2013 like smoking and drinking. In addition, many residents have a diet which doesn\u2019t include the number of fruits and vegetables they need as they\u2019re too expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiovascular diseases affect the heart (cardio) and blood\nvessels (vascular).
