{"id":5326,"date":"2019-09-16T11:56:59","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T08:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5326"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:32","slug":"support-growth-of-small-telecoms-firms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/09\/16\/support-growth-of-small-telecoms-firms\/","title":{"rendered":"Support Growth of Small Telecoms Firms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By David\nKeitany<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya\u2019s\ntelecommunications sector has for the longest time been driven by innovations\nthat have spurred robust business growth, creating employment and other related\nopportunities, directly and indirectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\n2018 GSMA report, The Mobile Economy Sub-Saharan Africa, indicates that in\n2017, mobile technologies and services generated about 7.1percent of GDP in\nsub-Saharan Africa, a contribution that amounted to about $110 billion of added\neconomic value. These figures are projected to rise to about 7.9 percent and\n$150 billion, respectively by 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mobile eco-system also supported about three million jobs, directly and indirectly, and made a substantial contribution to the funding of the public sector, with almost $14 billion raised through taxation; these are projected to rise northwards of 3.5 million jobs and $16 billion respectively by 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the growth seen over the years, Kenya\u2019s sector is still ailing; one player controls about 70 percent of the country\u2019s mobile subscribers and more than 90 percent of the revenue collected in the market. This phenomenon has stunted the growth of smaller players hence affecting the whole telecommunications eco-system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early\nthis year, Airtel and Telkom announced their intention to merge their\nrespective businesses to operate under a joint venture company that they have\nchristened Airtel-Telkom. The intention was laudable as it spoke to renewed\nhope in a precarious telecommunications arena.
