{"id":5274,"date":"2019-09-12T10:07:09","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T07:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5274"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:32","slug":"no-single-cholera-case-recorded-in-namibia-since-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/09\/12\/no-single-cholera-case-recorded-in-namibia-since-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"No Single Cholera Case Recorded In Namibia Since 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By <a href=\"https:\/\/neweralive.na\/author\/7992\">Albertina Nakale<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the increasing outbreaks\nof cholera in the Southern African region which is killing hundreds of people,\nNamibia did not record a single case of the disease since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An estimated 50,750 cholera\ncases and 266 deaths were reported across the Southern African Development\nCommunity (Sadc) region in 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first half of 2019, about\n28,260 cases and 886 deaths have been reported. Cholera cases vary widely among\nSadc member states, with countries like South Africa, Lesotho, eSwatini,\nMadagascar, Botswana and Namibia recording no cases since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is according to the latest\n2019 Synthesis Report on the State of Food and Nutrition Security and\nVulnerability in Southern Africa compiled by the Southern African Development\nCommunity (Sadc) Secretariat\u2019s regional vulnerability assessment and analysis\nProgramme, under the leadership of the food, agriculture and natural resources\ndirectorate and the disaster risk reduction unit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;The report shows that\nCyclone Idai led to an upsurge of cases in Mozambique, with over 7,000 cases\nand eight deaths reported in 2019 to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cholera&nbsp;is an infectious\ndisease that causes severe watery diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and\neven death if untreated.
