{"id":5265,"date":"2019-09-12T09:48:20","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T06:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5265"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:32","slug":"nyayo-tea-zone-to-be-cleared-in-second-phase-of-mau-restoration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/09\/12\/nyayo-tea-zone-to-be-cleared-in-second-phase-of-mau-restoration\/","title":{"rendered":"Nyayo Tea Zone To Be Cleared In Second Phase Of Mau Restoration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By Daily Nation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nyayo Tea Zone\nestate perched between the Mau and Olpusimoru forests will be cleared in the\nongoing second phase of restoring the Mau Forest Complex, Rift Valley Regional\nCommissioner George Natembeya has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Natembeya,\nspeaking in Nakuru, said the tea estate had encroached on the water towers and\nstarted farming in gazetted forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MAKE AMENDS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is this issue\nof the Nyayo Tea Zone, with people talking about the cutline and boundaries.\nNow the position is that [zone]was planted when there was a lot of encroachment\non Olpusimoru forest, a national government forest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people were moved\nout, he said, the tea was only planted to show the boundary and it was not\nmeant to show that the Maasai Mau forest was now available for settlement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven when you go to\nthe ground now, both the canopies for Maasai Mau and Olpusimoru forests are the\nsame. So we are saying that if indeed we were to plant tea, actually it is\nsupposed to benefit the people who were there before the ballooning of the\ngroup ranches into the forest.
