{"id":5183,"date":"2019-09-09T10:31:15","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T07:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5183"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:32","slug":"its-time-for-women-to-claim-a-voice-in-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/09\/09\/its-time-for-women-to-claim-a-voice-in-agriculture\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Time For Women To Claim A Voice In Agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By Melody Chironda<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accra \u2014 It is said that women are the backbone of the family\nand the bedrock of a nation, but yet we hardly hear about their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/view\/group\/main\/main\/id\/00062976.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">successes and triumphs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women hold the keys to Africa&#8217;s future but for decades women\nhave faced challenges and constraints in the agriculture sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/view\/group\/main\/main\/id\/00064194.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">women account for nearly half of the world&#8217;s smallholder\nfarmers and produce 70% of Africa&#8217;s food<\/a>. Yet, less than 20% of land\nis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/view\/group\/main\/main\/id\/00065264.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">owned by women<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making matters worse is that fact that at least half of\nwomen farmers face gender biases in agriculture. Many suffer from the effects\nof unequal land inheritance and ownership meaning that they can only have to\naccess land through either their husbands or sons. A few have rights over the\nland they tend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natalia Pshenichnaya, Head of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/mobilefordevelopment\/agritech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AgriTech\nProgramme GSMA<\/a>, in her presentation said that the agricultural labour force\nin Africa is made up of 49% women and 51% men.
