{"id":5180,"date":"2019-09-09T10:21:07","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T07:21:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5180"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:31","slug":"defeat-malaria-in-a-generation-heres-how","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/09\/09\/defeat-malaria-in-a-generation-heres-how\/","title":{"rendered":"Defeat Malaria In A Generation &#8211; Here&#8217;s How"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By James Gallagher<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The world could be\nfree of malaria &#8211; one of the oldest and deadliest diseases to affect humanity &#8211;\nwithin a generation, a major report says.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year there are\nstill more than 200 million cases of the disease, which mostly kills young\nchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report says\neradicating malaria is no longer a distant dream, but wiping out the parasite\nwill probably need an extra $2bn (\u00a31.6bn) of annual funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts say\neradication is a &#8220;goal of epic proportions&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is malaria?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaria is a disease caused by&nbsp;<em>Plasmodium<\/em>&nbsp;parasites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are spread from\nperson to person by the bite of female mosquitoes in search of a blood meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once infected, people\nbecome very sick with a severe fever and shaking chills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The parasites infect\ncells in the liver and red blood cells, and other symptoms include anemia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually the disease\ntakes a toll on the whole body, including the brain, and can be fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 435,000 people\n&#8211; mostly children &#8211; die from malaria each year\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-49592468\">Read\nmore&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By James Gallagher The world could be free of malaria &#8211; one of the oldest and deadliest diseases to affect humanity &#8211; within a generation, a major report says.
