Open defecation,\ninstead of using toilets,&nbsp;contributes to the spread of bacterial diseases\nsuch as cholera and diarrhea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tropical climate of Tamale makes its soil favorable\nfor the cultivation of staple cereals, legumes and tubers, and&nbsp;rice is a\nvery popular food. But when milling rice, the husk on the outer part of the\ngrain is often thrown away\u2014wasted. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the husk has unique physical and chemical properties\nthat are not being harnessed in Ghana and across many other African\ncountries.&nbsp;Laari\u2014a regional finalist in the Young Champions of the Earth\nprize in 2018\u2014decided to change this, using waste rice to address the problem\nof open defecation. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His idea is an eco-toilet, installed using boards made\nfrom rice husks. The husks are first dried and screened for particles of the\nright size. Then, they are blended and a special adhesive in liquid form is\nsprayed to make a sheet.
