Situated on the banks of the Korle Lagoon\nalongside the Old Fadama slum, it is home to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ban.org\/news\/2019\/4\/24\/rotten-eggs-e-waste-from-europe-poisons-ghanas-food-chain\">around\n80 000 people<\/a>. Back in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/agbogbloshie\">1960s as Ghana industrialized<\/a>,\nmigrants flocked to Accra and settled in Old Fadama. Then, around the year\n2000, ships started to come in with e-waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, many work at the \u201cdigital dumping ground\u201d,\nsorting through technological products like washing machines, cookers,\nvehicles, cell phones and computers. These products have historically been\nsourced from higher income countries such as the US or those in Europe. But\nthere has been a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rgs-ibg.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/geoj.12077\">shift\nin where e-waste is sourced<\/a>: domestically Ghana now produces its own\ne-waste, with imports being mainly made up of reusable electronics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agbogbloshie often receives bad press \u2013 it\u2019s even been\nnicknamed \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.welcome-to-sodom.com\/\">Sodom<\/a>\u201d after the\nBiblical city destroyed by God for its residents\u2019 sins. Workers burn cables\ncovered in plastic so they can get at the valuable copper contained in many\ndigital devices faster.
