{"id":5021,"date":"2019-09-02T09:38:08","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T06:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=5021"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:31","slug":"reducing-poverty-does-not-need-nuclear-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/09\/02\/reducing-poverty-does-not-need-nuclear-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Reducing Poverty Does Not Need Nuclear Science"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By The New Times<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If some people still bore\ndoubts that Rwanda\u2019s journey towards drastic poverty reduction among its\npopulation, they should have been in Kigali this past week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They would have witnessed firsthand how women are a key element and without whose support major government programs would not take off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their first stop should at\nthe National Women\u2019s Council (NWC) and get a peep at how things are done, it\ndoes not need to cook figures to prove a point. To start with; model villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept of the village is\nto uplift the most vulnerable by giving them decent housing accessible to all\nthe needed amenities, access to wages by working on community projects, and if\ntoo weak to work, getting direct support as well as improving their nutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the NWC has given itself\na challenge; to have a model village in each of the 416 administrative units\n(Sectors) in the country. Each vulnerable family in the village will have two\nfruit trees, domestic animals and be enrolled in savings cooperatives. Yes,\nRwanda dreams big, the difference with other big dreamers is that it strives to\nmake them come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A parting shot at all the\ndoubting Thomases; at about the same time NWC was unveiling its major project,\nthe Ministry of Agriculture was unveiling tools that will introduce rural women\nto basic ICT skills in agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local leaders have also been\ninstructed to seek out needy women and girls who could undergo Technical and\nVocational Training to improve their lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show that if women\nwere well equipped and given a bigger say on their farms, they would increase\nproduction by 20 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is just a tip of the\niceberg for anyone who wants to pull people out of poverty, not empty words.\n\nRead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newtimes.co.rw\/opinions\/editorial-reducing-poverty-does-not-need-nuclear-science\">Original\nArticle<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newtimes.co.rw\/\">the new times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By The New Times If some people still bore doubts that Rwanda\u2019s journey towards drastic poverty reduction among its population, they should have been in Kigali this past week.
