{"id":4961,"date":"2019-08-29T10:39:07","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T07:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4961"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:30","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:30","slug":"botched-cooking-gas-plan-hits-poor-homes-hardest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/29\/botched-cooking-gas-plan-hits-poor-homes-hardest\/","title":{"rendered":"Botched Cooking Gas Plan Hits Poor Homes Hardest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By Business Daily<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Low-income households have borne the brunt of a botched\ncheaper cooking gas plan, with prices of kerosene and charcoal rising rapidly\nin the past three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prices of the two\ncommodities have doubled since 2016, an analysis of the Kenya National Bureau\nof Statistics (KNBS) data shows, hitting hardest the poorer homes that largely\nrely on them for cooking and lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paraffin prices have\nsurged 116.93 percent to average Sh102.26 per liter in the January-June period\nof the year compared with a similar period in 2016 when the cost averaged\nSh47.14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A four-kilogram tin of\ncharcoal retailed for an average of Sh143.02 in the review period, an 81.84\npercent jump compared with three years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rise in kerosene\nprices, used to power cooking stoves and lanterns by poor homes as well as\npockets of small-scale fishermen, is largely linked to last September\u2019s\nimposition of Sh18 levy to deter use of the fuel to adulterate diesel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessdailyafrica.com\/economy\/Botched-cooking-gas-plan-hits-poor-homes-hardest\/3946234-5252528-sn9xlg\/index.html\">Read\nmore&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Business Daily Low-income households have borne the brunt of a botched cheaper cooking gas plan, with prices of kerosene and charcoal rising rapidly in the past three years.
